Librarians are busy people too

I love my job. I love my job.  I really do. Sometimes I just wish that everyone else understood how busy we are. They (meaning most other faculty members) just don't seem to grasp that we do things in the library. We teach, we staff the reference desk, we lesson plan, we select books for the collection, and troubleshoot lots of techology/assignment issues for faculty. But apparently, according to one of my colleagues, we in the library have more time on our hands. And maybe at some point in the semester that is true, but certainly not in the next 2 weeks. Tomorrow I'll be pulling a 12 hour day and Friday will be 10 hours at work (I might find 2 hours to go home and crash if a departmental meeting gets moved.) But because don't have a course-load apparently I have enough time on my hands to write up the second draft of a proposalf for this committee I'm on.

I sort of feel like we're on-call. The library and librarians are expected to always be available, but we all know that's not possible. There are only 4 of us and like 65 of them. Seriously. Let's do that math again. I did sort of appreciate the trust that something like this involves. I'm clearly joining the conversation at the university which I like. I like being part of the process; I like having my opinion valued. However, I would also like for my work to be recognized as well. And not just me, all the people in the library. I think the students see what we do, and some of the profs do. It is really nice to see the students recognize how helpful we are. That is nice :)

Ok, rant over. Soon we'll be back to our regularly scheduled happy blog :)

April weekends

I just solidified plans for this weekend today when it hit me: my April weekends are all over the place, and well so very me. Keeping with my new reality of being around Dubuque much more often than I have in the past, I'll be here for 3 of the 4 weekends. Ok, and by here I mean mostly here. I'll explain below. April 6-7 Julien Dubuque International Film Festival --I went to the festival last year with Gretchen. We had so much fun! We ended up seeing a different set of films than we originally thought, but it was still a blast. I was lucky enough to attend the Beloit International Film Festival with Kyle and his family last month, and this year he's coming down to spend the weekend watching films with me. Plus Nicole will be around for the weekend so she's coming along too! April 13-14 Twins game with Amy--We've got tickets to the Twins-Mets game on Sunday so I'll be driving back up to The Cities (I was just there over St. Patrick's Day weekend). I have...

About me

I feel like it's only fair I do a little bit of an intro for my new BEDA buddies: Christina , Autumn , and Nicola . For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about, a bunch (read over 200) of us participating in Blog Every Day in April signed up to have Maureen Johnson (the Churchill of BEDA as Alex Day called her) to match us up with BEDA buddies for moral support for the rest of the month. What we do with these buddies is up to us. I'm not quite sure yet what we'll do, if anything other than comment on each other's blogs. But I feel like I do the least on my blog to give an idea of who I am. So this post is hoping to rectify that. So here goes! I'm a midwestern born and bred. At 24, I've never lived more than 200 miles (a 3 hour drive) from the city I was born in. However, my parents threw us in the van and took us on driving vacations all over the country, where I fell in love with history and roadtrips. These two loves served me well in colleg...

Booklist

I found this in my RSS feed this morning and thought it was a nice way to start the day. It is a list created by the National Endowment for the Arts, and a blogger writes that they claim most American adults have read only six of these hundred books. I've read 23, but about half have been for school; however, some of those I chose to read for a class assignment. :) Here’s what you do: 1) Look at the list and bold those you have read. 2) Italicize those you intend to read. 3) Underline the books you LOVE. (Or in my case turn them green.) 4) Reprint this list on your own blog. 1 Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen 2 The Lord of the Rings - JRR Tolkien 3 Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte 4 Harry Potter series - JK Rowling 5 To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee 6 The Bible (um, how many people have actually sat down to read the Bible? Like, straight through? I'm counting it because I read at least a chapter every night.) 7 Wuthering Heights - Emily Bronte (I own it, but haven't read ...
