I feel like it's only fair I do a little bit of an intro for my new BEDA buddies: Christina, Autumn, and Nicola.
For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about, a bunch (read over 200) of us participating in Blog Every Day in April signed up to have Maureen Johnson (the Churchill of BEDA as Alex Day called her) to match us up with BEDA buddies for moral support for the rest of the month. What we do with these buddies is up to us. I'm not quite sure yet what we'll do, if anything other than comment on each other's blogs. But I feel like I do the least on my blog to give an idea of who I am. So this post is hoping to rectify that.
So here goes! I'm a midwestern born and bred. At 24, I've never lived more than 200 miles (a 3 hour drive) from the city I was born in. However, my parents threw us in the van and took us on driving vacations all over the country, where I fell in love with history and roadtrips. These two loves served me well in college and since then. I've earned a reputation at work for not actually living in Dubuque on weekends as I spent most of them this summer and fall visiting friends and family throughout the midwest.
When I'm not gallivanting all around Iowa and Wisconsin, I work as an academic librarian at a small private college. So far so good on my first professional job. I love the work and the people. The students (for the most part) have been great to work with. Like I said yesterday, I'm not totally in love with the city yet, but I think I'm still too busy comparing it to Madison. I was awfully spoiled living in Madtown for 2 years. Easy transportation, lots of great restaurants in one place, tickets to the basketball games, and my little sister. This is probably the part where I should say I'm a bit (read: a lot) of a sports fan. I grew up with season tickets to UW football games, and played basketball, ran cross country and played tennis at some point in my middle school/high school careers. I've recently become addicted to Brewers baseball too. (And boy are they struggling this year!)I'm also a music lover. I play piano (not well as I haven't practiced in ages) and sing. I co-directed a church choir in grad school. This is the first time since third grade that I haven't been in a musical group of some sort.
I've asked some of my closest friends IRL to give me 2 things they think you should know about me:
John: Thinks you should know that I get up at 2am to watch live tennis. And also that I'm a beer fan (apparently a rare attribute in females according to him).
Amy: Thinks you should know I like to talk. A lot. Whether its phone, chat, email, texts, or good old fashioned face-to-face I've got it covered! And I'm fiercely loyal. Its one of her favorite things about me. (This one is new to me. Yay!)
Emily: Thinks that you should know that I'm always up for a coffee and a chat, and that I take awesome pictures.
Gretchen: Thinks you should know I'm a movie buff, and that I also have a weird love of Disney/Nickelodeon kid shows and movies from my past.
Manda(my sister):
My parents: Think you should know that I sing-talk (sing what I'm saying...not full out High School Musical) and that I named my rocking horse Odie Dodie Bum when I was little.
If anyone else reading this blog wants to add things the girls should know, leave them in the comments!

Do you mean you sing-talk like Marshall on How I Met Your Mother? It is seriously weird how good MJ was at matching up all of us as BEDA buddies, I'm already loving this! I didn't even think of doing a 'getting to know you' entry..Brilliant!

@Christina That's exactly what I mean. And I did it long before HIMYM. She did do well, especially considering how little she had to go on. :)

You are easy to live with and always manage to have a story to tell (that's a GOOD thing, not a bad thing, as I've met far too many people in the last couple of years who can't squeak out anything conversationally).

ReplyDeleteA continuation of Becky's sport fan-ness that should be noted is that, like any good fan, it is not easy to speak with her after her team loses.
Awesome! I lived in California last year for the academic year so I have lots of American friends - but none from the Midwest! So that's very exciting.
ReplyDeleteI'm also guilty of getting up at obscene times for the tennis - when I was in CA over winter break I turned on the Australian Open final as it started at 2AM and stayed up til 7 to watch it all! Tennis is the only sport I'm really into though. I do like baseball too.
Always good to know I'm not the only one who is willing to spend an entire day with a coffee and a chat! I always talk my friends out and they just want to go home and shut up =) & I'm sure we'll bond over Disney, I have plenty more posts coming up about that!

ReplyDeleteGreat idea, and thanks for the information BEDA buddy. I see Nicola followed suit and I should do so as well. It's only fitting. It seems like we'll be a good group with a lot of common ground. And I really like your idea about getting your friends' input.
