Things I love Thursday

This week was the last calm week before the storm. The students move back next week, and then the craziness ensues. One toast to calm!

  • the return of reality tv: It's great to see Top Chef and Project Runway back. Watching these two shows always inspire me to yank out the pots and pans and sewing machine. And since they're already out, it's only helping to cultivate that urge!
  • good movie adaptations: Manda and I went to see "The Time Travelers Wife" Saturday night. I really enjoyed it. I absolutely loved the book when I read it in college (and appreciated it even more after studying at the Newbery Library where a significant portion is set). I often avoid adaptations, especially ones with complex story lines, but this one was surprisingly well done. A good story. It's not the book, but I still really liked it.
  • homemade pie crust: I'd never made my own pie crust before this week, but the recipe I linked last Monday really worked well and was so easy. She's right. Making a crust really does show your love, even if it's that easy.
  • meeting my new neighbors: They're missionaries at another local college. Both girls look about my age and seem fun in the few minutes I talked to them. It'll be nice to have more young people in the building.
  • getting my internet fixed: My internet is back. Which means I can finally take advantage of Amy getting a webcam! I miss seeing her face everyday now I get to substitute this. No more cutting out in the middle. Conference calling on skype with Em and Amy made me feel at home again :)

  1. Um yeah you get to see my face. Its called a picture. Duh. But pretty sure that conf. call was the most hilarious thing ever. Lucky for you, I do repeat performances. :)

April weekends

I just solidified plans for this weekend today when it hit me: my April weekends are all over the place, and well so very me. Keeping with my new reality of being around Dubuque much more often than I have in the past, I'll be here for 3 of the 4 weekends. Ok, and by here I mean mostly here. I'll explain below. April 6-7 Julien Dubuque International Film Festival --I went to the festival last year with Gretchen. We had so much fun! We ended up seeing a different set of films than we originally thought, but it was still a blast. I was lucky enough to attend the Beloit International Film Festival with Kyle and his family last month, and this year he's coming down to spend the weekend watching films with me. Plus Nicole will be around for the weekend so she's coming along too! April 13-14 Twins game with Amy--We've got tickets to the Twins-Mets game on Sunday so I'll be driving back up to The Cities (I was just there over St. Patrick's Day weekend). I have...

About me

I feel like it's only fair I do a little bit of an intro for my new BEDA buddies: Christina , Autumn , and Nicola . For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about, a bunch (read over 200) of us participating in Blog Every Day in April signed up to have Maureen Johnson (the Churchill of BEDA as Alex Day called her) to match us up with BEDA buddies for moral support for the rest of the month. What we do with these buddies is up to us. I'm not quite sure yet what we'll do, if anything other than comment on each other's blogs. But I feel like I do the least on my blog to give an idea of who I am. So this post is hoping to rectify that. So here goes! I'm a midwestern born and bred. At 24, I've never lived more than 200 miles (a 3 hour drive) from the city I was born in. However, my parents threw us in the van and took us on driving vacations all over the country, where I fell in love with history and roadtrips. These two loves served me well in colleg...

Booklist

I found this in my RSS feed this morning and thought it was a nice way to start the day. It is a list created by the National Endowment for the Arts, and a blogger writes that they claim most American adults have read only six of these hundred books. I've read 23, but about half have been for school; however, some of those I chose to read for a class assignment. :) Here’s what you do: 1) Look at the list and bold those you have read. 2) Italicize those you intend to read. 3) Underline the books you LOVE. (Or in my case turn them green.) 4) Reprint this list on your own blog. 1 Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen 2 The Lord of the Rings - JRR Tolkien 3 Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte 4 Harry Potter series - JK Rowling 5 To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee 6 The Bible (um, how many people have actually sat down to read the Bible? Like, straight through? I'm counting it because I read at least a chapter every night.) 7 Wuthering Heights - Emily Bronte (I own it, but haven't read ...
