Things I Love but was too busy playing with/enjoying to blog about on Thursday, Friday post

Sorry about the lack of a good TILT blog yesterday. Honestly I was planning to blog yesterday. That is until my phone decided to go heywire. After attempts to fix it Wednesday night, I figured it was time to buy a new one since I was due for a 2-year upgrade in less than a month anyway. So I did. Quickly became addicted and...well that's why you didn't get a post yesterday. Sorry.

I'm only really thinking about the work week. If I did a TILT for the whole week since last Thursday it would be a mile long. I'm reserving the weekend as a wholly separate thing. If you want to know what I did Saturday, I've blogged about it already. But I don't want to go back and blog about the rest of it. It would be like tainting it with this week. :( I'm mental. I know.

Onto the Things I love:
  • my phone--After asking for advice and suggestions about phones, I ended up with the LG Ally. It's a smart phone (my first!) with both a touch screen and slide out QWERTY keyboard. I absolutely love it. So easy to use. I think I've mostly got it figured out. I've already thrown Twitter and a sports score app on there. Slowly but surely I'll add more. But right now I have to force myself to take breaks from the phone. It's all I wanted and more :)
  • volleyball scorekeeping--The other reason I didn't blog yesterday was because I was also teaching myself how to be a scorekeeper for college volleyball. We're hosting a tournament this weekend, and the coach needed volunteers to help out. I've wanted to help out since last year when UD hired someone I knew from my alma mater (she worked as an assistant coach and in student life when I was there), but the matches were mostly on Wednesday nights when I worked. So this year, my late night switched and I offered to help. The first time she needed help was this weekend so I got a crash course in scoring this week, and watched/helped tonight so I'd be ready for 3 matches tomorrow. I think I've got it, but you may need to say a prayer for my aching hands :)
  • Memphis--A week from today I'll be in Memphis traveling with a class. It's a cross-listed course in music and history about the 60s music and counterculture. I've worked a lot with this class in the past. This fall I'll be in the class 3 days helping them with research and presentations, so the profs asked me along on their jaunt down to Memphis. We leave Thursday about noon and get back Saturday around midnight. There are 14 students, the 2 profs, me, and alum of the class/reporter. It should be a blast. Another reason I'm glad to have a smart phone. No lugging a laptop with me. I'm still debating on the camera.
  • surviving all my classes so far--I've taught 13 classes in the past 2 weeks. I've also dropped in on 3 more (2 for the Memphis/60s class...in addition to 3 full classes later this fall!). 9 of those were the first RES104 day which had a bit of a new twist this year. That class always takes a lot of energy since there is no work time for the students. Just me in front leading the class for 50 full minutes. I wish I could say next week looked like a lighter load. But that would be a lie. I've got 5 classes and 2 meetings before I leave at noon on Thursday. Basically I think I'll have time to breathe again by the 3rd week of October.
  • Clockwork Angel--I've only just started it, but I'm excited for it. However, at the rate I'm reading it (2 chapters in 3 days) I won't finish it til December! Maybe when I'm not at the tourney or making Indian food this weekend I'll get some read. Or when the students all go out in Memphis. Quiet Becky reading time sounds like a great idea. :)

April weekends

I just solidified plans for this weekend today when it hit me: my April weekends are all over the place, and well so very me. Keeping with my new reality of being around Dubuque much more often than I have in the past, I'll be here for 3 of the 4 weekends. Ok, and by here I mean mostly here. I'll explain below. April 6-7 Julien Dubuque International Film Festival --I went to the festival last year with Gretchen. We had so much fun! We ended up seeing a different set of films than we originally thought, but it was still a blast. I was lucky enough to attend the Beloit International Film Festival with Kyle and his family last month, and this year he's coming down to spend the weekend watching films with me. Plus Nicole will be around for the weekend so she's coming along too! April 13-14 Twins game with Amy--We've got tickets to the Twins-Mets game on Sunday so I'll be driving back up to The Cities (I was just there over St. Patrick's Day weekend). I have...

--Weekly Wrap Up--

Media/fashion round up of my week TV: One issue with being a fan of a British TV show? Having to avoid spoilers until you can find a copy of it online to watch. Thankfully a twitter acquaintance posted a link to Matt Smith's debut episode of Doctor Who. I wasn't sure I was going to enjoy the show without the darling David Tennant, but it was ok. I still enjoyed it. He's no David Tennant, but I'll definitely still watch. I love the cheeky humor. I also watched the first 8 episodes of season 2 of Veronica Mars while cleaning. Is there a better way to clean? Books: I finally got around to reading "If I Stay" by Gayle Forman. It's amazing. I got quite sucked in to the book. It had me sobbing by the end. I really appreciate books that can tell a story so well that I'm emotionally tied to the characters. If you haven't read it or are not a YA reader, you should pick it up. It's about a 17-year old girl who has a major decision to make about life. I...

Booklist

I found this in my RSS feed this morning and thought it was a nice way to start the day. It is a list created by the National Endowment for the Arts, and a blogger writes that they claim most American adults have read only six of these hundred books. I've read 23, but about half have been for school; however, some of those I chose to read for a class assignment. :) Here’s what you do: 1) Look at the list and bold those you have read. 2) Italicize those you intend to read. 3) Underline the books you LOVE. (Or in my case turn them green.) 4) Reprint this list on your own blog. 1 Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen 2 The Lord of the Rings - JRR Tolkien 3 Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte 4 Harry Potter series - JK Rowling 5 To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee 6 The Bible (um, how many people have actually sat down to read the Bible? Like, straight through? I'm counting it because I read at least a chapter every night.) 7 Wuthering Heights - Emily Bronte (I own it, but haven't read ...
