What an expensive week

Ok, there will be no more spending any money for a while. Ugh. This has proven to be a bit of an expensive last week and a half. Some of it I planned on spending, some of it not so much. The Ames trip I was planning on. No problems there. The oil change...a necessity, but certainly not my favorite way to spend money. The washing machine? Another necessary expense. I ended up spending less than I had originally planned (w/ a $200 rebate) in mind. But because I didn't get the rebate, I toyed with buying another top-loading machine. They're cheaper, but less efficient in the long run. I ended up with a name-brand front load high efficiency one. Since I don't plan on buying another washing anytime in the near (or distant) future, I figure the money I save on water and electric will be nice. Plus it's a brand I trust. I'm not usually a brand shopper. You should see me in a grocery store. I love store brands and cheap deals. But with something like an appliance I feel like I should be responsible and buy something that will actually last. So that was more money I had to part with. And then came the car. As I'm sure some of you know, I love my little Fidget. She's a Ford Focus, and sometimes I feel like I practically live in that car in the summer. On my way to my girl's weekend I noticed it was making way more noise than it ever had before, so I took it into the dealership on Friday. Two hours, two new tires and an alignment later....I walked out of there with a much happier Fidget and a much lighter wallet. Again, I know, not having a car isn't really an option. And this was a necessary fix, but it was another major expense this week. One I was hoping would be much less. I think most of the problem is the fact that it came in one week. My tax refund covers the washing machine, so it's really just the other stuff that's coming out of pocket, but still.

Alright, enough whining about money. It's over and done and spent. And soon I will have a new washer!! Yay! And my car doesn't make me so nervous anymore! Yay! And I always love hanging with my girls! Yay! No more negativity. I'm trying to stay positive this year. This mouse problem has not made that easy, but we think we've finally got it fixed. We found a possible entry point and plugged it. So I praying that's the end of it. Keep your fingers crossed!

  1. Yay fore green appliances! I'm proud. :)

  2. Once you've used a front loading washer, I don't think you can go back. The fact that you can fit so much more in them and they are more efficient is wonderful.

April weekends

I just solidified plans for this weekend today when it hit me: my April weekends are all over the place, and well so very me. Keeping with my new reality of being around Dubuque much more often than I have in the past, I'll be here for 3 of the 4 weekends. Ok, and by here I mean mostly here. I'll explain below. April 6-7 Julien Dubuque International Film Festival --I went to the festival last year with Gretchen. We had so much fun! We ended up seeing a different set of films than we originally thought, but it was still a blast. I was lucky enough to attend the Beloit International Film Festival with Kyle and his family last month, and this year he's coming down to spend the weekend watching films with me. Plus Nicole will be around for the weekend so she's coming along too! April 13-14 Twins game with Amy--We've got tickets to the Twins-Mets game on Sunday so I'll be driving back up to The Cities (I was just there over St. Patrick's Day weekend). I have...

About me

I feel like it's only fair I do a little bit of an intro for my new BEDA buddies: Christina , Autumn , and Nicola . For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about, a bunch (read over 200) of us participating in Blog Every Day in April signed up to have Maureen Johnson (the Churchill of BEDA as Alex Day called her) to match us up with BEDA buddies for moral support for the rest of the month. What we do with these buddies is up to us. I'm not quite sure yet what we'll do, if anything other than comment on each other's blogs. But I feel like I do the least on my blog to give an idea of who I am. So this post is hoping to rectify that. So here goes! I'm a midwestern born and bred. At 24, I've never lived more than 200 miles (a 3 hour drive) from the city I was born in. However, my parents threw us in the van and took us on driving vacations all over the country, where I fell in love with history and roadtrips. These two loves served me well in colleg...

Booklist

I found this in my RSS feed this morning and thought it was a nice way to start the day. It is a list created by the National Endowment for the Arts, and a blogger writes that they claim most American adults have read only six of these hundred books. I've read 23, but about half have been for school; however, some of those I chose to read for a class assignment. :) Here’s what you do: 1) Look at the list and bold those you have read. 2) Italicize those you intend to read. 3) Underline the books you LOVE. (Or in my case turn them green.) 4) Reprint this list on your own blog. 1 Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen 2 The Lord of the Rings - JRR Tolkien 3 Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte 4 Harry Potter series - JK Rowling 5 To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee 6 The Bible (um, how many people have actually sat down to read the Bible? Like, straight through? I'm counting it because I read at least a chapter every night.) 7 Wuthering Heights - Emily Bronte (I own it, but haven't read ...
