Happy Birthday Manda!!

Today my little sister turns 24. And boy do I feel old. But in a good way. A favorite author of mine once said that "I think today for a lot of people siblinghood is a relationship that occurs primarily in childhood, and then when you're adults you still talk but you mostly talk about your parents or your other siblings or familial matters of some kind...and you're stuck with the same image of your siblings that you had when you were little. [...] I think it's an increasingly rare pleasure to know your siblings as adults." (John Green, Dec. 28: John's Last Brotherhood 2.0 Video)

I am incredibly lucky to be able to say I know my sister as an adult. And I love the adult that she's grown up to be. She's the bestest little sister a girl could have. So sorry I couldn't be there to celebrate with you today in person! Now I recognize that most of you might not agree that 24 and almost 27 make us adults, but to that I'd remind you the last time we really lived together for more than 3 months of the year was in 2002 almost 9 years ago.

Like most teenagers we had our differences, we bickered and fought, but when push came to shove we had each others back. When I went off to college I think it hit us both. There were lots of IM sessions and homework help phone calls. When she went college, I realized how not helpful I was going to be when it came to college advice. We both ended up at small private liberal arts colleges, but that's where the similarities ended. My one-class-at-a-time in the middle of nowhere college with a random roomie and not knowing a soul experience was so not going to help the girl going to the traditional semester college in the heart of Madison living in a single and keeping up with high school friends in town.
But even without useful advice, she flourished. And then paid me back when I moved to Madison a year later for grad school. Suddenly the roles were reversed and she was my guide around the city and the public transport and the restaurant scene. Those 2 years spoiled me. Having my sister across town was great (sometimes stressful and crazy), but I wouldn't give it up for anything.

So far the fates have kept us geographically close, and I know as we get older and find our way in the world this might not always be true. But I do know one thing, siblinghood is not something we'll only experience in childhood. You're stuck with me now darling. Happy Birthday!!!

April weekends

I just solidified plans for this weekend today when it hit me: my April weekends are all over the place, and well so very me. Keeping with my new reality of being around Dubuque much more often than I have in the past, I'll be here for 3 of the 4 weekends. Ok, and by here I mean mostly here. I'll explain below. April 6-7 Julien Dubuque International Film Festival --I went to the festival last year with Gretchen. We had so much fun! We ended up seeing a different set of films than we originally thought, but it was still a blast. I was lucky enough to attend the Beloit International Film Festival with Kyle and his family last month, and this year he's coming down to spend the weekend watching films with me. Plus Nicole will be around for the weekend so she's coming along too! April 13-14 Twins game with Amy--We've got tickets to the Twins-Mets game on Sunday so I'll be driving back up to The Cities (I was just there over St. Patrick's Day weekend). I have...

About me

I feel like it's only fair I do a little bit of an intro for my new BEDA buddies: Christina , Autumn , and Nicola . For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about, a bunch (read over 200) of us participating in Blog Every Day in April signed up to have Maureen Johnson (the Churchill of BEDA as Alex Day called her) to match us up with BEDA buddies for moral support for the rest of the month. What we do with these buddies is up to us. I'm not quite sure yet what we'll do, if anything other than comment on each other's blogs. But I feel like I do the least on my blog to give an idea of who I am. So this post is hoping to rectify that. So here goes! I'm a midwestern born and bred. At 24, I've never lived more than 200 miles (a 3 hour drive) from the city I was born in. However, my parents threw us in the van and took us on driving vacations all over the country, where I fell in love with history and roadtrips. These two loves served me well in colleg...

Booklist

I found this in my RSS feed this morning and thought it was a nice way to start the day. It is a list created by the National Endowment for the Arts, and a blogger writes that they claim most American adults have read only six of these hundred books. I've read 23, but about half have been for school; however, some of those I chose to read for a class assignment. :) Here’s what you do: 1) Look at the list and bold those you have read. 2) Italicize those you intend to read. 3) Underline the books you LOVE. (Or in my case turn them green.) 4) Reprint this list on your own blog. 1 Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen 2 The Lord of the Rings - JRR Tolkien 3 Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte 4 Harry Potter series - JK Rowling 5 To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee 6 The Bible (um, how many people have actually sat down to read the Bible? Like, straight through? I'm counting it because I read at least a chapter every night.) 7 Wuthering Heights - Emily Bronte (I own it, but haven't read ...
