Wireless

I've lived in this apartment for 20 months now, and have thus far survived without wireless internet. And before then, I lived in university housing without wireless for an additional 20ish months. But I think I'm finally starting to reach that breaking point. My parents gave me a (yet-unpurchased) couch/daybed/futon/something to sleep on for my spare bedroom for Christmas. This means, I really need to clean out that room which has sort of just become a storage room for stuff. Not that big of a deal, but it's going to take me a while to sort out the random stuff that's in there. Most of it I never really unpacked, clearly leading me to believe I probably don't need it all that badly if I haven't bothered to use it in the last 20 months. To be fair, it's also housing some of my crafting stuff, and holiday decorations too. So the cleaning/sorting/donating to Goodwill or my mom's rummage sale will commence tonight. (And continue until finished!) The drawback of this is that for the next week to 10 days at night, I'll be stuck in my guest bedroom without internet. So no watching Hulu, or chatting with friends, or keeping an eye on the game score while I'm back there. Arg. I think I really ought to just suck it up and by a wireless router and get it over with. Then I can listen to Brewers (or Twins) games from my computer this spring while I do laundry, or make my bed, or watch a show on Hulu while I do crafts in the guest bedroom instead of taking over the living room floor.

So the next question becomes, which brand/kind should I get? And how do I set it up? Any of you with wireless want to give suggestions??

  1. We have a Linksys router, but then my father-in-law works for Cisco Systems and gave it to us. But it works really great. They are relatively easy to set up too. However, I didn't do it so I can't provide any real help with that.

  2. I like Netgear because I can put on 2 or 3 levels of security on it. Very nice. And if you ever get one, I can provide setup.

April weekends

I just solidified plans for this weekend today when it hit me: my April weekends are all over the place, and well so very me. Keeping with my new reality of being around Dubuque much more often than I have in the past, I'll be here for 3 of the 4 weekends. Ok, and by here I mean mostly here. I'll explain below. April 6-7 Julien Dubuque International Film Festival --I went to the festival last year with Gretchen. We had so much fun! We ended up seeing a different set of films than we originally thought, but it was still a blast. I was lucky enough to attend the Beloit International Film Festival with Kyle and his family last month, and this year he's coming down to spend the weekend watching films with me. Plus Nicole will be around for the weekend so she's coming along too! April 13-14 Twins game with Amy--We've got tickets to the Twins-Mets game on Sunday so I'll be driving back up to The Cities (I was just there over St. Patrick's Day weekend). I have...

About me

I feel like it's only fair I do a little bit of an intro for my new BEDA buddies: Christina , Autumn , and Nicola . For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about, a bunch (read over 200) of us participating in Blog Every Day in April signed up to have Maureen Johnson (the Churchill of BEDA as Alex Day called her) to match us up with BEDA buddies for moral support for the rest of the month. What we do with these buddies is up to us. I'm not quite sure yet what we'll do, if anything other than comment on each other's blogs. But I feel like I do the least on my blog to give an idea of who I am. So this post is hoping to rectify that. So here goes! I'm a midwestern born and bred. At 24, I've never lived more than 200 miles (a 3 hour drive) from the city I was born in. However, my parents threw us in the van and took us on driving vacations all over the country, where I fell in love with history and roadtrips. These two loves served me well in colleg...

Booklist

I found this in my RSS feed this morning and thought it was a nice way to start the day. It is a list created by the National Endowment for the Arts, and a blogger writes that they claim most American adults have read only six of these hundred books. I've read 23, but about half have been for school; however, some of those I chose to read for a class assignment. :) Here’s what you do: 1) Look at the list and bold those you have read. 2) Italicize those you intend to read. 3) Underline the books you LOVE. (Or in my case turn them green.) 4) Reprint this list on your own blog. 1 Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen 2 The Lord of the Rings - JRR Tolkien 3 Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte 4 Harry Potter series - JK Rowling 5 To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee 6 The Bible (um, how many people have actually sat down to read the Bible? Like, straight through? I'm counting it because I read at least a chapter every night.) 7 Wuthering Heights - Emily Bronte (I own it, but haven't read ...
