things i learned thursday

i really loved amy's post this week. so i'm stealing the idea.

things i learned thursday

  • even at the age of 26, swinging on a swing set is fun. i got to the concert early tonight and figured i really ought to explore more of the park. i wandered further into the park than i had before and found a completely empty playground. the summer i spent in madison i used to go swing once every 2 or so at a cute little (underused) park. just a few minutes on a swing and a lot of problems seem less important or not so dire.
  • even after spending an average of 150 hours standing in front of a class for the last 2 years. i still get nervous. we're planning a skit of an over-the-top informercial for orientation. in it, i will be playing the role of the student. and mostly i'm nervous to get up in front of students and play a role. i'm really starting to realize i'm jsut being myself when i teach. here's to hoping i can muster the courage to pull it off as over dramatically as i do in my office.
  • beijing is 13 hours ahead of the central time zone. an important thing to know if one of your good friends got a perfect job that will send him there for a least a year.
  • making flower clips is easier and cheaper than finding them to buy. ever since i cut my hair short. iv'e really wanted to wear a flower clipped in my hair. (watching aarti on next food network star hasn't hurt). i looked at a few of my traditional places without any luck. amy suggested i make them. so i bought some supplies this week and figured out a way to construct some. i basically made them slider that would fit on head bands, bobby pins or clips.
  • i love disney song. whether it's singing them laying in john's driveway with the gan, rocking out to them on the drive home, or listening to an Aladdin medley at the band concert, they make me feel at home.

  1. Can you interpret this for me? I'm not criticizing the type... I'm just curious how you made them! "i basically made them slider that would fit on head bands, bobby pins or clips" :)

April weekends

I just solidified plans for this weekend today when it hit me: my April weekends are all over the place, and well so very me. Keeping with my new reality of being around Dubuque much more often than I have in the past, I'll be here for 3 of the 4 weekends. Ok, and by here I mean mostly here. I'll explain below. April 6-7 Julien Dubuque International Film Festival --I went to the festival last year with Gretchen. We had so much fun! We ended up seeing a different set of films than we originally thought, but it was still a blast. I was lucky enough to attend the Beloit International Film Festival with Kyle and his family last month, and this year he's coming down to spend the weekend watching films with me. Plus Nicole will be around for the weekend so she's coming along too! April 13-14 Twins game with Amy--We've got tickets to the Twins-Mets game on Sunday so I'll be driving back up to The Cities (I was just there over St. Patrick's Day weekend). I have...

About me

I feel like it's only fair I do a little bit of an intro for my new BEDA buddies: Christina , Autumn , and Nicola . For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about, a bunch (read over 200) of us participating in Blog Every Day in April signed up to have Maureen Johnson (the Churchill of BEDA as Alex Day called her) to match us up with BEDA buddies for moral support for the rest of the month. What we do with these buddies is up to us. I'm not quite sure yet what we'll do, if anything other than comment on each other's blogs. But I feel like I do the least on my blog to give an idea of who I am. So this post is hoping to rectify that. So here goes! I'm a midwestern born and bred. At 24, I've never lived more than 200 miles (a 3 hour drive) from the city I was born in. However, my parents threw us in the van and took us on driving vacations all over the country, where I fell in love with history and roadtrips. These two loves served me well in colleg...

Booklist

I found this in my RSS feed this morning and thought it was a nice way to start the day. It is a list created by the National Endowment for the Arts, and a blogger writes that they claim most American adults have read only six of these hundred books. I've read 23, but about half have been for school; however, some of those I chose to read for a class assignment. :) Here’s what you do: 1) Look at the list and bold those you have read. 2) Italicize those you intend to read. 3) Underline the books you LOVE. (Or in my case turn them green.) 4) Reprint this list on your own blog. 1 Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen 2 The Lord of the Rings - JRR Tolkien 3 Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte 4 Harry Potter series - JK Rowling 5 To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee 6 The Bible (um, how many people have actually sat down to read the Bible? Like, straight through? I'm counting it because I read at least a chapter every night.) 7 Wuthering Heights - Emily Bronte (I own it, but haven't read ...
