Decisions and why I love indie bookstores, pt. 2

Last night after work I bucked up and made a decision about my cooking class conundrum. Thanks to all those of you who voted here, on Facebook, or on Twitter (some of you twice...Michael...I'm looking at you!) I decided that Indian food sounded fun, yummy, repeatable, and something a few more of you might enjoy eating when you visit. So I drove myself over to the store (ended up buying 2 other things because I cannot get out of a cooking/kitchen gadget store without something!!) and signed up for the class! It's paid for which helps the whole, I'm too tired to do anything excuse that will inevitably come up next week. I really am looking forward to it. Now for all of you who were stoked about the paella, if I like this class, I'll probably sign up for that one too. Expensive little 3 weeks there, but it's the only other class in the near future that I'm interested in. A decent investment I'm sure.

Onto part 2 of this blog post. Indie bookstores. If you weren't aware, May/June tends to be a bit of a gift-purchasing time for me. There are the requisite Mother's and Father's Day gifts. My dad's birthday is May 29. And 2 of besties have birthdays. Plus at least 3 other good friends get cards. And this year my sister is also graduating/moving. So gifts galore. Being both a librarian and a book snob (not mutually exclusive...take note) I love to give books as gifts. And I love buying locally. So you can imagine the joy I get shopping at my local independent bookstore. I love it so much I blogged about it last year during BEDA. Today was no exception. Monday I placed an order for 2 books for someone (recipient shall remain nameless) and I got the call today that they were in. I went to pick them up. At River Lights, they've got a Reader's Reward Club (no punch cards to remember, just the last 4 of your phone number) where you get 5% off each purchase, and 5% additionally on Bestsellers. So on my purchase today I saved $2.70 simply by filling out a form, 3 years ago when I moved here. And then on top of it, I got to redeem my $5 gift card. For every $100 I spend there I get a $5 gift card. So today, I saved $7.70 by shopping local. Could I have spent less on Amazon? Yes. But does Amazon offer fun conversations, a bookstore cat, and a chance to benefit my local economy while making me feel good about myself? No. And that's just one more reason I love my indie bookstore. Don't know if you have one nearby? Find out here.Ok...local buying rant over.

  1. you might check to see if they have an educator's discount. For some reason I think they do as we bought something there and just happened to mention what we do and she gave us some percent off.

  2. Actually I think that's the other 5% I got off. Because neither were best sellers. On the form to fill out for the program, there's a check box for teacher and one for librarian. :)

I happened to mention I was moving to Dubuque when I signed up, they asked what I did, I told them, the owner knew Mary Anne. You know...Dubuquers.

April weekends

I just solidified plans for this weekend today when it hit me: my April weekends are all over the place, and well so very me. Keeping with my new reality of being around Dubuque much more often than I have in the past, I'll be here for 3 of the 4 weekends. Ok, and by here I mean mostly here. I'll explain below. April 6-7 Julien Dubuque International Film Festival --I went to the festival last year with Gretchen. We had so much fun! We ended up seeing a different set of films than we originally thought, but it was still a blast. I was lucky enough to attend the Beloit International Film Festival with Kyle and his family last month, and this year he's coming down to spend the weekend watching films with me. Plus Nicole will be around for the weekend so she's coming along too! April 13-14 Twins game with Amy--We've got tickets to the Twins-Mets game on Sunday so I'll be driving back up to The Cities (I was just there over St. Patrick's Day weekend). I have...

About me

I feel like it's only fair I do a little bit of an intro for my new BEDA buddies: Christina , Autumn , and Nicola . For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about, a bunch (read over 200) of us participating in Blog Every Day in April signed up to have Maureen Johnson (the Churchill of BEDA as Alex Day called her) to match us up with BEDA buddies for moral support for the rest of the month. What we do with these buddies is up to us. I'm not quite sure yet what we'll do, if anything other than comment on each other's blogs. But I feel like I do the least on my blog to give an idea of who I am. So this post is hoping to rectify that. So here goes! I'm a midwestern born and bred. At 24, I've never lived more than 200 miles (a 3 hour drive) from the city I was born in. However, my parents threw us in the van and took us on driving vacations all over the country, where I fell in love with history and roadtrips. These two loves served me well in colleg...

Booklist

I found this in my RSS feed this morning and thought it was a nice way to start the day. It is a list created by the National Endowment for the Arts, and a blogger writes that they claim most American adults have read only six of these hundred books. I've read 23, but about half have been for school; however, some of those I chose to read for a class assignment. :) Here’s what you do: 1) Look at the list and bold those you have read. 2) Italicize those you intend to read. 3) Underline the books you LOVE. (Or in my case turn them green.) 4) Reprint this list on your own blog. 1 Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen 2 The Lord of the Rings - JRR Tolkien 3 Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte 4 Harry Potter series - JK Rowling 5 To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee 6 The Bible (um, how many people have actually sat down to read the Bible? Like, straight through? I'm counting it because I read at least a chapter every night.) 7 Wuthering Heights - Emily Bronte (I own it, but haven't read ...
