Ok. The topics I suggested are not supposed to be the hardest ones for me to write. That just seems a bit ironic, don't you think? A little too ironic. (You know you totally needed that stuck in your head. You can thank me later.)
Where was I? Oh right, advice. I think my favorite advice is "It's not forever, it's just for now." A bit pessimistic sounding, I know, but stick with me for a minute. I'm a bit of a perfectionist. And am one of the least decisive people I know, though both Gretchen and Blake give me a run for my money. (Seriously, the three of us together for a weekend was hilarious. We practically had to force each other to make decisions.) Anyway..back to the advice part of this blog.
Making big decisions are tough. I get stuck inside my own head and make it harder. I want to make sure it's the right decision. I want it to be the perfect career, job, college, major, apartment, outfit, student org, etc. But I need to remind myself not to get so worked up about everything. It's just for now. I'm not signing away my life. (Until I really am. Then I'm screwed.)
Not many of you know this, but librarianship was not what I thought I'd be doing right now. At least until about September of senior year of college. I was adrift in a sea of insecurity. I'd always been that girl that knew what I wanted to do with my life. Always. Since I was 5. I knew. I was the one that had it together. And all of sudden that was all gone. I was 3 years into a triple-major with no career plans. Not uncommon for students, but not for me. I went searching for ideas. I came across library science and thought, ok. I can do that for a while. And if I super hate it, I can at least buy myself another 2 years to figure myself out. I went in with the not forever, just for now mentality. Little did I know I'd fall in love the profession. And later a job I applied for thinking not a huge fan of instruction and teaching, but it pays. And I fell in love with the job just as quickly.
So I guess it's mostly about trusting myself, but sometimes that's hard to do. If I just think of it as a "for now" that might just turn into a "forever," I can justify it. It's like Avenue Q says, "only for now."
And just because I can't do an advice blog without linking my favorite sung advice, from one of my favorite funny movies: "Be Yourself!"

OMG! I'm a perfectionist as well! AND, I'm indecisive! Yay, sameness!
ReplyDeleteIt's like Raaaaaiiiiiiaaaaaiiiiiiiinnn on your wedding day!
ReplyDeleteNow that you mention it, I remember you reminding me that "it's not forever" when I was having my postgrad quarter-life crisis. It really helped, so thank you for that.
ReplyDeleteIn my defense, I was the host and you and Gretchen were the guests. I thought by taking a back seat and letting you two make decisions, I was being a good host.
ReplyDeleteI'm not saying I'm the king of decision making though. I've been known to spend up to 20 minutes in the cereal aisle after all.
